About Us

our history

how it was

Knoxville Youth Athletics was established by area youth track, field and cross country enthusiasts.  Among them Marty Sonnenfeldt youth athletics director for the Knoxville Track Club from 1987 thru May of 2012.  Inducted into the 2011 KTC Hall of Fame, Sonnenfeldt learned from one of the best in track and field / cross country former University of Tennessee coach Stan Huntsman.  An All-SEC performer for the Vols in track and cross country Sonnenfeldt has assembled a leadership staff with over 80 years of combined experience in Youth Athletics.

The Knoxville Youth Athletics Program was established to focus on developing the sport of track and field and cross country in the local area.  The Knoxville Youth Athletics program serves over 10,000 of kids ages 5-18 in the areas of Outdoor Track and Field, Cross Country, Indoor Track and Field and Running.  Encompassing 43 events and 9 instructional programs Knoxville Youth Athletics is a year-round community support organization for our sport. Our mission is to deliver programs and events to our area youth at the lowest possible cost so that finances are not a barrier to participation.  Knoxville Youth Athletics also provides over $27,000 annually to area schools, physical education departments, track and cross country teams to insure the continued health of the sport and its participants.

Kids of all abilities have taken their first steps towards an active lifestyle through Knoxville Youth Athletics programs and events.  Others have gone on to further their competitive aspirations in the sport of track and field and cross country.  Our management team has provided the foundation for some to garner national honors and qualify for our country’s Olympic Team.   Over 20 college coaches have gotten their start with Knoxville Youth Athletics with 12 continuing to coach in the college ranks.
